About

Haughton-le-Skerne Local History Society was formed in 2003. The group are busy making preparations for the 2019 Remembrance Exhibition in November.

Previously, meetings were held on varying dates throughout the year between May & October in the very lovely Haughton Methodist Chapel, built in 1825 and situated on The Green, where talks were presented by both members and guest speakers. Following the above mentioned exhibition, there are no plans to hold any further group meetings but it is intended to to build up and run our online website with a chat facility available.

Part of the Society's aim was to collect photographs, documents and artifacts, relating to the history of Haughton.

To date the society have published 2 books, the last 'HAUGHTON-LE-SKERNE MEMORIES' compiled by Carol Atkinson and is a collection of member's memories (with accompanying photos) produced in 2014. Previous publications include ‘WALK BACK IN TIME AROUND HAUGHTON-LE-SKERNE’ by Carol Atkinson and also a number of booklets written by Haughtonians past and present, about their memories and family histories.

A number of members have enjoyed historical walks in the Barmpton Area; the first to Moor House Farm then continuing on through Catkill Woods. The second walk took the walkers to the Pack Horse Bridge via the ‘Welsh Mountains’ and in doing so skirted past Skerningham Woods then finally out onto Green Lane.

Outings further a field have also taken place: to the 1940s Weekend at Haworth; an atmospheric trip on the Wensleydale Railway in the snow and also to Kilburn the home of the world famous Mouseman Furniture Business formed by Robert ‘Mousey’ Thompson.

For over a decade members and guests have enjoyed socialising, researching and preserving the history of Haughton-le-Skerne.
